Volunteers Help at First Light Shelter

Leslie Bentley (left) leads the Our Lady of Sorrows Church (OLS) team delivering and serving home cooked meals to guests at First Light Shelter in Birmingham. More than a dozen parishioners volunteered to prepare and serve dinner to dozens of homeless guests at the shelter in downtown Birmingham on April 3. Several people cooked dinner featuring fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, green beans, and rolls. In addition, they provided a variety of desserts including cherry cobbler and brownies plus iced tea and lemonade. OLS works with the shelter about 14 days each year, coordinated by Leslie Bentley. First Light is a center in downtown Birmingham for homeless women and children. It offers the only emergency shelter accepting homeless women and families in the area.
