St. Mark’s to host retreat

St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church in Birmingham will host “Be Set Free: Healing the Wounded Heart Retreat” hosted by Arise Worship Ministry and Women of Grace® beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Friday evening. During the retreat, Johnnette Benkovic Williams will lead men and women through a 5-part seminar on healing. The retreat will also feature music with Catholic recording artist Danielle Rose, prayer, reflection, and fellowship. The cost is $45 per person, which includes lunch on Saturday. Clergy and religious are free but still need to register. The church is located at 7340 Cahaba Valley Road. MLK Diocesan Prayer Breakfast

The Catholic Diocese of Birmingham in Alabama’s Office of Black Catholic Ministry will host a Diocesan Prayer Breakfast at the Cathedral of St. Paul’s Life Center in commemoration of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., starting at 10 a.m. Tickets are $30 and are available for purchase through the Office of Black Catholic Ministry, jwatts@bhmdiocese.org or 205.838.8313. Cursillo School of Leaders
The Cursillo School of Leaders (SoL) will hold a gathering at Sacred Heart Catholic Church’s Parish Hall from 9:30 a.m. until noon. The School of Leaders is for Cursillistas who wish to serve and strengthen the movement. This year the group will be discussing the book "Whom Shall I Send?" by Father Frank Salmani. Attendees are also encouraged to share their thoughts on improving the movement during the Work of the Sections. Registration is not required, but please e-mail rskutsor@yahoo.com for questions. Santo Nino de Cebu Festival

Bishop Emeritus Robert Baker will celebrate Mass, marking the Santo Nino de Cebu Festival, at St. Francis Xavier Church, starting at 9 a.m. The celebration will coincide with the annual cultural and religious festival of the same name held in the Philippines. Padre Pio Prayer Group

The Padre Pio Prayer Group will begin meeting at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church staring with the Jan. 17 meeting. The day will begin with Mass at 9 a.m., followed by exposition, the Rosary, prayers to Padre Pio and benediction. Following this first meeting, there will be a potluck brunch in the Holy Family Center. The group meets every third Saturday of the month at 9 a.m. The church is located at 7340 Cahaba Valley Road in Birmingham. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd 

Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic School and Parish School of Religion will host Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, Level 1 Adult Formation Course, beginning at 9 a.m. and concluding at 5 p.m. The program is a developmental, hands-on approach to the religious formation of children based on 70 years of research and observation and spiritually nourishes adults who participate in the work. The classes are taught in a prepared environment called "an atrium," and seek to aid children in spiritual and moral formation through falling in love with Jesus, the Good Shepherd. The course will take place once a month for 11 months.
