A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Gardendale will hold lessons and carols at 5 p.m. The evening will feature Scripture and song, in English and Spanish, celebrating the Christmas story. The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This is the patronal feast day of the United States of America. The solemnity is a holy day of obligation.


Wednesday, Dec. 10

Comfort and Joy Adventure Concert

St. Joseph Catholic Church in Huntsville will host award-winning Catholic composers and musicians Sarah Hart and Steve Angrisano for the duo’s “Advent Comfort and Joy” concert, beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets for the concert are $25 for adults. Advent Night of Reflection

Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Birmingham will hold an Advent Night of Reflection at 6:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served from 4:30-5:50 p.m. The evening’s guest speaker will be Father Gerald Holloway, pastor of Holy Infant of Prague Catholic Church in Trussville. Downtown Concert Series

The Cathedral of St. Paul will hold a concert titled, “A Cathedral Christmas,” at 4 p.m. as part of its Downtown Concert Series. The interactive concert will feature a blend of sing-along favorites as well as solo and ensemble performances. The concert is free of charge; however, donations to the Cathedral Music Fund are welcomed. Smart casual dress is recommended. The cathedral is located at 2120 3rd Avenue, North in Birmingham. Cavalier Reindeer Run

The John Carroll Athletic Booster Club will host a 1-mile fun run followed by a 5K run on the John Carroll Catholic High School campus, starting with Mass at 8 a.m. in the school’s chapel. The fun run will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the 5K immediately following. This event is open to the entire family. For ages 4-18, the fun run fee is $20, and the 5K fee is $40. Every participant registered by Dec. 7 will receive a t-shirt and a race participation medal. John Gardiner will be ordained to the transitional diaconate at 11 a.m. at Holy Spirit Parish in Huntsville by Bishop Raica. Who is the Man of the Shroud?

St. Leo the Great Catholic Church in Demopolis will host a Shroud of Turin exhibit with doors opening at 9:30 a.m. and presentations at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Doors will close at 4:30 p.m. The Shroud of Turin has been venerated for centuries as the actual burial cloth of Jesus and is widely considered to be the most studied object in the world. All are invited to explore faith, science, scripture, and hope in this new and completely updated exhibit that in July debuted at the National Eucharistic Congress in Indianapolis. The exhibit was developed by Othonia, a part of the Institute of Science and Faith at the Regina Apostolorum Pontifical University located in Rome, Italy. The exhibit includes a full-size, high-fidelity replica of the Shroud, 24 panels describing the Shroud, replicas of passion weapons, a replica of a 1st Century Jewish tomb, and a bronze statue of the Man Whose image was formed on the Shroud.
