Seminarian Education Fund Appeal

On the weekend of Aug. 2-3, the diocese will hold the Seminarian Education Fund Appeal, which will directly supports the 21 seminarians being formed to become priests serving the people of God within the diocese. This year, a generous benefactor has pledged to match every gift to the Seminarian Education Fund up to $1 million throughout 2025, doubling the impact of each donation.

The Diocese of Birmingham will mark the feast of St. John Vianney, co-patron of the diocese. St. John Vianny, pray for us.

Father Coyle Memorial Mass

The memorial Mass marking the 104th anniversary of Father James E. Coyle’s death for the faith will be celebrated at the Cathedral of St. Paul at 10 a.m. A reception will follow. Men's Cursillo Weekend
St. Bernard Abbey in Cullman will host the next Men’s Cursillo weekend, starting at 6:15 p.m. in Thursday evening. The Cursillo Movement offers the method, tools, and support needed to live a fuller, more vibrant Christian life. Saturday, Aug. 16

Nazareth House

Nazareth House is seeking Catholic high school youth to volunteer as teachers for the 2025-2026 school year and will hold a training and orientation workshop from 9 a.m. until noon at St. Francis Xavier Catholic School in Birmingham. Nazareth House provides religious education, sacrament preparation, and liturgy to children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Padre Pio Prayer Group

The Padre Pio Prayer group will meet on Saturday, Aug. 16, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Homewood. All are welcome to join the group for an hour of prayer, the Rosary, adoration, and Holy Mass led by Father Eric Gami. Fishers of Men Dinner

The Guadalupe Radio Network in Alabama will hold its seventh annual “Fishers of Men” Dinner at the Harbert Center in downtown Birmingham. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., starting with a social hour. The dinner begins at 7 p.m. Catholic Answers apologist and author Dr. Karlo Broussard will be the keynote speaker, and Father Frankline Fomukong, pastor of St. Charles Borromeo and St. Joachim, will be this year’s honoree. Harriet Cloud to speak at upcoming Magnificat Breakfast

The Service Team of Mary, Woman of Faith Chapter of Magnificat invites the women of the diocese to its Magnificat Breakfast on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish Hall, which is located at 1728 Oxmoor Road in Homewood. The speaker will be Harriet Cloud, a centenarian with an exceptional intellect and a mind which has remained sharp. She has a unique perspective on the world, and her story is a testament to the power of unwavering reliance on prayer which allowed her to persevere through different stages of her life. Tickets are on sale through Aug. 17. A meal ticket is $20 and includes a catered breakfast. They are available online at BirminghamMagnificat.org or by e-mail at magnificat0296@gmail.com. St William Seafood Festival

St. William Catholic Church will hold their 55th annual Seafood Festival on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the parish’s Foley Center. The menu will include gumbo, boiled shrimp, half BBQ chicken dinner, and catfish dinners. The dinners include coleslaw and hush puppies. A la carte items available will be hush puppies, coleslaw, and rice. St. Bernard Abbey Monk bread will also be available. Proceeds from the event will go to benefit local charities. On Friday from 4-6 p.m., those wishing to purchase frozen gumbo by the quart, Cajun boiled shrimp by the pound, half BBQ chicken, and St. Bernard Abbey Monk bread can do so using the drive thru option.
