Sharing Warmth at First Light Shelter

More than 100 Our Lady of Sorrows parishioners volunteered to give warm pajamas to women being served by First Light Shelter in Birmingham. Several dozen large gift bags, each containing numerous sets of sleepwear, were accepted on Dec. 2 by (left) April Graham, administrative coordinator at the shelter, and (right) social worker Penny Stock. Volunteers also cooked and served dinner that featured fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, baked beans, and dessert. Church volunteers work with the shelter about 14 days a year, coordinated by Leslie Bentley. First Light is a center for homeless women and children located in downtown Birmingham. It offers the only emergency shelter accepting homeless women and families 24 hours a day in the area.
