Parish hosts birthday party for Jesus

Love for baby Jesus and babies in Birmingham inspired nearly 100 children and adults to attend the annual Birthday Party for Jesus and Her Choice Birmingham Women’s Center Benefit at Our Lady of Sorrows Church on Dec. 17. The event on the third Sunday of Advent included parishioners donating baby items to the center and meeting its director, a grateful Joy Pinto. “Two births changed the world: John the Baptist and Jesus. And every child’s life is sacred,” Pinto said. “Our Lady of Sorrows makes it possible, every single day, for Her Choice to be open where we work with girls who have an unplanned pregnancy to choose life. We love them, supply all their needs, and we do adoption. For women and men who’ve had abortion in the past, we restore them, we renew them.” The morning also included children enacting St. Luke’s Gospel account of the Nativity, singing Christmas carols and Happy Birthday, and eating cupcakes. The celebration was a joint project of the Madonna and Child Guild and Children's Liturgy. Pinto noted that besides being Gaudete Sunday it was Bambinelli Sunday, an Adent tradition started by Pope John Paul II in which children bring their baby Jesus figure for a blessing before placing Him in the creche.
