76 years of July 4th fun and faith
The 76th Annual Independence Day Festival at Our Lady of Sorrows Church (OLS), Birmingham’s oldest Fourth of July festival, welcomed several hundred people on July 3 and July 4. The Knights of Columbus Council 4304 coordinated the event. Happy to provide for parishioners and community members, the Knights began cooking 10,000 pounds of meat every day for more than a week. On July 3, bulk orders were filled for meat, side dishes, and whole cakes. The knights prepared Boston butts, turkey breasts, slabs of ribs, chicken halves, and hot dogs. Baked beans, slaw, homemade baked goods, and beverages were also available. During the festival, several dozen volunteers served meals, facilitated games, a raffle, and the Trash and Treasure rummage sale for bargain hunters. Festival proceeds support Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic School and the charitable work of the Knights of Columbus Council 4304.
