Catholic Social Services of the Diocese of Birmingham was chosen as this year’s recipient of the 2023 Great AIDE Innovation in Disaster Excellence Award for the office’s response to the 2021 tornado that affected the Fultondale area. Al Manzella, executive director of the diocesan Catholic Social Services office, received a plaque and a check for $5,000 from Kim Burgo, vice president of Disaster Operations of Catholic Charities USA, in early December in Raleigh, North Carolina, at the annual Applied Institute for Disaster Excellence.
