Transplant Games an opportunity to share Church’s teaching
Birmingham hosted the 2024 Transplant Games of America from July 5-10, bringing together nearly 10,000 members of the transplant community. Held every two years, the games celebrate life for transplant recipients, living donors, donor families, individuals on the waiting list, caregivers, and transplant professionals. Organ donation after death is viewed by the Church as an act of charity. The catechism states it is a “noble and meritorious act and is to be encouraged as an expression of generous solidarity.” (no. 2296) In Alabama, Legacy of Hope is the state’s organ and tissue donation alliance. As an active member of Legacy of Hope’s African American Task Force, James Watts, diocesan director of Black Catholic Ministry, volunteered at the games.
