Students receive scholarship

Knight of Columbus Paul Smith presented Prince of Peace Catholic School students Jocelyne Aguilar and Leon Kubik with the 2025 Patrick Francis Werszner Memorial Scholarship on May 16 at the school’s graduation Mass. The $1,000 scholarship to John Carroll Catholic High School is awarded to an eighth-grade student attending the school in the fall and is renewed for three years at $500 if criteria are met. Veronica Werszner and John Werszner, siblings of the scholarship namesake, were also present for the award presentation.

Aguilar, the daughter of Santiago Aguilar and Maricella Lopez of Hueytown, serves the parish as an altar server and participates in the Caring Needles Ministry with her mother. Kubik, the son of Kenneth Kubik and Su Chen Su of Hoover, is a National Junior Honor Society member and a recipient of the Gold Presidential Award for academic excellence as well as math and history awards. He volunteers as a Sunday Mass greeter and has served as an usher, altar server, and in the choir for school Masses.

The POP Knights of Columbus Council 11537 established the scholarship ten years ago to honor Patrick Francis Werszner who passed away at age 19. He was a 2010 graduate of Prince of Peace Catholic School and a 2014 graduate of John Carroll Catholic High School. At the time of his death, he was a student at UAB, a member of the POP Knights of Columbus, and a parishioner at St. Stephen the Martyr and Prince of Peace Catholic Churches.
