Local school retires principal’s basketball jersey
John Carroll Catholic High School in Birmingham celebrated the legacy of Principal Ronald Steele on Oct. 30 as members of the senior class honored him for his four years of service as principal and his lasting impact.
The celebration culminated in a special presentation recognizing Steele’s remarkable connection to his alma mater: the retirement of his John Carroll basketball jersey, No. 22.
Steele’s connection to the school began long before he became the school’s principal. As a student, he was a member of the National Honor Society, served as a campus minister, and distinguished himself as a standout football and basketball player. He helped lead the Cavaliers to back-to-back state basketball championships in 2003 and 2004, earning Alabama Mr. Basketball honors both years. Steele continued his historic basketball career at The University of Alabama.
Today, Steele holds another historic distinction as the first John Carroll Catholic alumnus to serve as principal. In that role, he has continued to lead the school with faith, humility, and a servant’s heart, embodying the school’s mission to help students grow in mind, heart, body, and soul and become servant leaders.
During Friday’s ceremony, the senior class also recognized the family members who helped shape Steele into the leader he is today. His mother, Linda Steele, was present for the celebration, while the school community remembered his late father, Ronald Steele Sr., who passed away in 2017. There was also a special video presentation from Steele’s brother, Andrew (JCCHS Class of 2008).
As the seniors and members of the basketball team unveiled his retired jersey, the school community celebrated a legacy that extends far beyond athletic accomplishments.
“Coach Steele, thank you for coming home, for leading with faith, and for showing our students what it means to be a Cavalier,” was the statement shared by the senior class.
