Students attend ACT camp at John Carroll Catholic
This summer, rising 10th, 11th, and 12th graders from John Carroll Catholic High School and Over-the-Mountain schools attended a specially designed ACT camp to help them prepare for the upcoming test given in July and on future ACTs.
Sixty-five students received personalized instruction from John Carroll's certified team of ACT instructors and content experts. Before camp began, the instructors charted each student's PSAT/ACT historical data to see how best to achieve improvement according to ACT standards. Additionally, the team allowed for student choice, recognizing that people learn differently and have independent goals.
Students worked on English through creative, playful, and thematic content. Math included explanatory review and gamified, levelized practice sessions. Reading and science looked at strategies, tips, and tricks for staying focused and moving forward.
In addition to John Carroll's team of instructors, including Dr. Amanda GIles, Julie Clifton, Dr. Katie King, Lee Ann Fuller, and Dr. Susan Lagrone, the camp included John Carroll’s partner VIDAL Access founder Lance Beverly. Beverly provided the students with a cohesive understanding of the role that the ACT plays in college acceptances and scholarship process, and he graciously gifted all attendees a 6-month access pass to Magoosh (an online test prep platform with over 250 lessons, 1,300 ACT questions, and full-length practice tests). The students also have ongoing resources through a Google Classroom where slides, questions, and extension problems from the camp are available.
John Carroll looks forward to launching its semester-long ACT Prep Class this fall and will host another summer ACT Camp for 10th-12th grade students next summer (July 7-11, 2025).
