Deacon Phil Boettcher goes home to the Lord

Deacon Philip (Phil) Frederick Boettcher passed away on March 11, 2025, at his daughter’s residence in New Orleans at the age of 77. Deacon Phil was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and was awaiting treatment. 

Deacon Boettcher was born on July 20, 1947. He was a graduate of St. John's University and earned the M.T.S. degree at Spring Hill College. He was ordained a deacon by Bishop Robert J. Baker on Dec. 1, 2018, at the Cathedral of St. Paul. During his ministry, he faithfully served his parish, St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church in Birmingham, and as a chaplain in St. Vincent's Hospital Spiritual Care Department.

He is survived by two daughters. Visitation will take place at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church on Thursday, April 10, at 5 p.m. with a Vigil for the Deceased at 6:30 p.m. The next day, visitation at the church will begin at 9 a.m., and Bishop Raica will celebrate the funeral Mass at 10 a.m. The church is located at 7340 Cahaba Valley Road. 

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace.
