Sister Maria Eugenia Moreno, a Missionary Guadalupan Sister of the Holy Spirit, passed gently into the arms of Jesus and Mary on Saturday, Jan. 18. She was surrounded by her religious sisters and her brother, José Ignacio Moreno. She is predeceased by her parents, Ignacio Moreno Contreras and Josefina Moreno Camarena. 

Sister Moreno, known affectionately as "Sister Maru," was deeply loved by many and served in many Catholic parishes throughout Mexico and the United States. Known for her cheerfulness and commitment to mission, Sister was especially dedicated to forming couples for the sacrament of holy matrimony and to forming families to live a more beautiful Catholic Christian life. In August of 2023, she celebrated her 50th anniversary of consecrated life at Sacred Heart Parish in Anniston. 

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Jan. 23 at Anniston’s Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church with Father John G. McDonald as celebrant.
