On Nov. 7, 2025, Deacon Gerald Motherway, a retired deacon of the diocese, passed into eternal life. He was ordained a permanent deacon in Chicago on April 18, 1982. He is survived by his wife, Patricia. During his ministry in the Diocese of Birmingham, Deacon Motherway served Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Hoover from 1990 to 2000 as well as Holy Family Catholic Church in Ensley. His funeral Mass will be held at noon on Saturday, Jan. 24, at Holy Family Catholic Church. In The funeral will also be livestreamed on www.holyfamilybirmingham.com. The church is located at 1910 19th Street, Ensley.
