OLS staff member appointed to national board
Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic School and Church recently announced that Maris Wimberly, director of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, has been elected to serve on the National Board of Trustees for the United States Association of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGSUSA). One of only nine trustees nationwide, Wimberly will help guide the organization’s mission and leadership as it continues to foster a shared religious experience for children and adults rooted in contemplation, wonder, and a joyful relationship with God.
The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a Montessori-based religious formation program that helps children develop a relationship with God through Scripture and liturgy. Children participate in a specially prepared space called the Atrium, where they explore the Mass, sacraments, and parables through hands-on materials and prayerful reflection. Developed in Rome by Sofia Cavalletti and Gianna Gobbi beginning in 1954, the program emphasizes calling forth a child’s spiritual response rather than simply instructing them.
Wimberly has served as the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Director at the church and school since 2011. In this role, she oversees catechists and scheduling, ensures the program is implemented in accordance with the 32 Points of Reflection, maintains Atrium materials, coordinates the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Open House events, and recruits and trains new volunteers. She has also overseen the completion of Level II and Level III Atrium environments.
In addition to her school and parish work, Wimberly has presented the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd at diocesan events, Catholic Schools Formation Days, and national formation courses. She became a formation leader in 2015, and her guidance has helped expand the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program throughout Alabama. Wimberly also travels throughout the United States, offering adult formation courses and participating in national meetings as well as the 70th anniversary celebration held in Arizona.
Wimberly joined the national Board of Trustees in November 2025, bringing her experience, dedication, and faith to this vital leadership role. Our Lady of Sorrows is privileged to have her serving in this ministry both locally and nationally.
