Mass returns to Redstone Arsenal
Redstone Arsenal’s Bicentennial Chapel, an interdenominational chapel rich in national symbolism and imagery, saw its first Catholic Mass since 2019 on June 3 with Father Joy Challisery, pastor of Most Merciful Jesus Catholic Parish, celebrating the Mass. The impetus behind the Mass came from Lt. Col. Deepak Mathew, who was the commanding officer of Fox Army Health Center on Redstone Arsenal in Madison County. Other Catholic employees rallied around the idea of having Mass on base, so the proposal was brought to the acting base chaplain, a Protestant minister, who agreed to open the chapel to the group. After the base’s Catholic supplies and statues were pulled out of storage, Lt. Col. Mathew and Bill Adams, a parishioner of St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish in Madison, made all the preparations, including music and securing Father Chalissery and Deacon Rick Tuggle. About 50 faithful attended the unadvertised weekday Mass offered for those who sacrificed their lives for the nation. The positive response has encouraged efforts to restore a regular Catholic presence at the chapel.
