‘With love we serve, building a future of hope’

A letter from Bishop Raica
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, each year, as we begin the Diocesan Annual Appeal for Ministries — also known as Catholic Charities — I am moved by the deep faith, generosity, and compassion that mark the people of our diocese. You are the living witness of Christ’s love in action, and it is with gratitude and hope that I address my appeal.
As part of the Jubilee Year theme centered on “hope,” this year’s theme, “With Love We Serve — Building a Future of Hope,” speaks not only to what we do together, but why we do it. We are a Church on mission — called to serve, to lift up, and to bring the light of Christ into the lives of those in need. Whether it is the care we provide through our Centers of Concern, the work of our Catholic schools and faith formation, the formation of future priests and deacons, or the outreach to the poor, imprisoned, sick, and vulnerable, your generosity serves as a vital link for effective ministry.
The needs in our diocese are real and growing. Families are facing new economic and spiritual challenges. Our parishes are striving to do more, not just to maintain what is but to build a future filled with hope. That’s why this year’s appeal is more important than ever. Together, as a united family of faith, we can respond not with fear or hesitation but with the bold courage of the Gospel and the strength of our love.
This issue of One Voice, and future issues, will highlight some of the extraordinary accomplishments of our annual appeal. Together, we are united in a mission that enables us to meet and exceed expectations for our many varied ministries. I remain confident that we can accomplish God’s work whenever we do what we do in the name of Christ.
We are not asking everyone to do everything, but we are asking everyone to do something. Participation matters. Prayers for success of the annual appeal matter. Every gift, no matter the size, is a sign of solidarity and shared mission. For those who are blessed with the ability to do more, your generosity helps build capacity for expanded ministries in order to reach those who are waiting for hope, healing, and welcome.
The Church is more than a building — it is the people of God, alive and active, reaching out to the world with mercy and purpose. Your gift to the annual appeal is a tangible way to live your faith, to make love real, and to build something enduring for the generations to come.
I ask you, as a fellow Christian and your bishop, in the context of prayer and thoughtful consideration, to support this year’s appeal. Ask yourself, “How is the Lord calling me to serve with love, and how can I help build a future of hope for our diocese?” I trust the Holy Spirit will move your heart to respond generously and joyfully.
May our efforts be blessed, our hearts be united, and our diocese shine brightly with the love of Christ here in central and northern Alabama.
With gratitude and prayers for you and your loved ones, I remain sincerely yours in Christ.
The Most Reverend Steven J. Raica is the fifth bishop of the Diocese of Birmingham in Alabama.
