Holy Family Cristo Rey senior awarded prestigious scholarship

Holy Family Cristo Rey Catholic High School, located in the historic Titusville neighborhood of Birmingham, recently announced that senior Dorianni Mendoza Arellano will attend college at no cost after matching to the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, through the QuestBridge National College Match program.

Arellano is one of 2,550 high school seniors from across the United States and U.S. territories who matched with 55 college partners and will receive full four-year scholarships to their top choice schools as QuestBridge Match Scholarship recipients. The Match Scholarship — provided by the school — is made up of a generous financial aid package that covers the full cost of attendance, including tuition, housing and food, books and supplies, and travel expenses. The match scholarship does not include loans or a parental contribution

“Being named a QuestBridge Match Scholar is a truly life-changing accomplishment and a testament to Dorianni's hard work and commitment to our mission,” said Bo Garrett, president of Holy Family Cristo Rey Catholic High School. “Her success affirms that our students are college-ready, career-prepared, and equipped to thrive at the nation’s top institutions.

During her four years at Holy Family Cristo Rey, Arellano excelled in the rigorous college-preparatory curriculum. She is a dedicated student and leader, serving as a student ambassador and holding membership in the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica. Arellano was also selected as a Bateman Scholar through the College Choice Foundation. Through the Corporate Work Study Program, she has gained valuable professional experience for two years at Children's of Alabama and previously participated in the Cristo Rey Creates program. Her commitment to her education exemplifies the Cristo Rey spirit.

“Dorianni is a phenomenal student, and we are ecstatic to see her hard work pay off in this way,” said Dr. Lex Brown, director of College Counseling. “This match celebrates Dorianni’s talent and the support of her teachers, mentors, and family who believed in her abilities. Holy Cross is a strong fit for her gifts and goals, and we are excited to see her thrive in college and beyond.”

The QuestBridge Match Scholarship removes the financial barrier to a world-class education, allowing Arellano to focus entirely on her academic journey. Holy Family Cristo Rey is proud to celebrate her success as she moves one step closer to her career aspirations.
