Explaining and Defending The Faith

Apologetics

In an article in the One Voice newspaper way back when, Bishop David Foley said: โ€œThere comes a time when we, as Catholics, have to be able to defend and explain certain teachings of our Catholic faith ... Our faith is based on reason and logic. The explanation of what we believe and why we believe it, is called apologetics.โ€

Over the next several issues of the One Voice magazine, I will be providing examples of simple approaches that the average Catholic sitting in the pews can use to defend and explain our Catholic faith to those who question or even attack that faith. As Bishop Foley said, our faith is based on reason and logic, and these approaches I will be sharing are based on those very things โ€” reason and logic.

In my more than 25 years of being involved in evangelization and apologetics โ€” locally, nationally, and internationally โ€” I have found that most Catholics know the what of the Catholic faith, but not a lot of them know the why of the Catholic faith.

We know what we do and what we believe, but weโ€™re not always clued in to why we do what we do and why we believe what we believe. If we donโ€™t know why we believe, then how can we explain it to others?

So, I hope this series of articles will help Catholics better understand why we believe what we believe so as to be better able to defend and explain the faith when called upon to do so.
