‘We adore you, O Christ, and we praise You’

As we mark the Lenten season, focusing on being pilgrims of hope, the One Voice would like to offer our readers an opportunity to take a closer look at the Stations of the Cross. Also known as the Way of the Cross, the Stations depict 14 moments of the day of Jesus’ death.

As we make our way through this Jubilee Year, it is fitting that we look upon the Stations as an opportunity to make a spiritual “pilgrimage” to the scenes of Christ’s sufferings and death in order to grow closer to Him. Pilgrims of old would follow the actual footsteps of Christ through Jerusalem on the Via Dolorosa. However, the ability to do so was unrealistic for many. As a result, over time, the Stations of the Cross developed as a means for every Catholic to journey with Christ. While the Stations can be said at any time throughout the year, the so-called “prayer pilgrimage” is most commonly prayed during Lent.

How to pray the Stations of the Cross

  • Name the Station.
  • Read aloud: “We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You. (Kneel) Because by Your Holy Cross You have redeemed the world.” (Rise)
  • Meditate on the Station.
  • Pray the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be.
  • Repeat these steps for each Station.
