The power of an invitation

For Father Wyman Vintson, priesthood was simply a thought that wouldn’t go away. In 2006, Father Wyman entered into full communion with the Catholic Church at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church in Birmingham. He came to recognize a particular attraction to the liturgy, which he describes as an “interior attraction” that gradually led him to consider the priesthood more seriously.

The attraction led to him making daily Mass a habit, and his attendance didn’t go unnoticed. The parish’s sacristan, Lou Inzinna, went up to the relatively new Catholic and asked him if he would help set up for Mass. He graciously agreed. Next, Inzinna asked him to read at Mass. Again, he agreed. Then, one day, Inzinna said, “You should think about going to seminary. Have you thought about it?” He quickly responded that he hadn’t. However, Father Wyman admits he wasn’t telling the truth.

By this time, he was in his early 30s. The thought of priesthood was not all-encompassing, but it wasn’t entirely absent either. Convinced he would be denied, he decided he would put the idea “to bed” by inquiring about seminary.

Not surprisingly, 10 years later, he was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Birmingham by Bishop Robert J. Baker.

After his ordination, a familiar face crossed his path. Remembering that day Inzinna asked him about seminary, Father Wyman told her, “You knew I was lying!” Without skipping a beat, she replied with a smile, “Yes, I knew you were lying.”

As Vicar for Vocations, Father Wyman understands the call to priesthood not only because he has answered that call, but because he helps other men discern the call. He explains it as an invitation, much like that of Inzinna’s. The Lord does not command or mandate an answer; rather, He invites men to consider what that persistent thought means for their lives. Of course, it would be easy to simply “lie” and push the thought out, but, “at some point,” Father Wyman said, “you must entrust yourself” and see what the Lord has in store.
