Parish holds workday to prepare for festival

Members of the Knights of Columbus Council 4304 at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church and other volunteers turned out for a parish work day to get ready for the Birmingham area’s oldest Independence Day Festival. The goal was to prepare the gym for the trash and treasure rummage sale which is a highlight for many people in the community. The crew spent most of May 20 setting up a shelving system throughout the athletic center. More volunteers are needed as well as items for the rummage sale. Items including toys, tools, shoes, electronics, and small appliances may be dropped off at the school gym starting Memorial Day weekend. Furniture donations should be dropped off at the parking deck. The last day for donations is July 1. Items that are clean and in working order are welcome. Items not accepted include broken and non-working items, mattresses, expired car seats, cribs, sleeper sofas, pianos, large appliances, encyclopedias, and tube TVs. The July 4 festival is a team effort organized by the Knights to benefit the school and various charitable endeavors.
