OLS Volunteers at First Light Shelter

More than 20 Our Lady of Sorrows (OLS) parishioners volunteered to donate their time, talent, and treasure to feed dozens of homeless guests at First Light Shelter in downtown Birmingham on Nov. 15. Several people cooked dinner featuring fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, green beans, and rolls. In addition, they provided a variety of desserts and beverages. Volunteers also loaded and drove the food from OLS to the shelter and stayed to serve the dinner. OLS works with the shelter about 14 days a year, coordinated by Leslie Bentley. Among the volunteers serving were two members of the Knights of Columbus and a teenager. First Light is a center for homeless women and children located in downtown Birmingham. It offers the only emergency shelter accepting homeless women and families 24 hours a day in the area.
