Local parish hosts Red Cross blood drive

Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Parish in Homewood hosted a successful American Red Cross blood drive organized by the Knights of Columbus Council 4304 on Jan. 18. Parishioners and community members donated 34 blood units in five hours, which included 30 pints of whole blood and two units of Power Red. Power Red is a process in which only platelets are harvested, helping blood transfusion recipients. Donors and their families were treated to a hot breakfast, cooked and served by the Knights. The parish’s new parochial vicar, Father Jacob Ebong Ntoko, was on hand meeting some of the Knights and donors. Blood donations benefit patients with cancer, sickle cell anemia, burns, and those with chronic diseases. Our Lady of Sorrows next blood drive is set for Sunday, March 15.
