Local parish celebrates tradition of St. Joseph Altar

Parishioners of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Homewood celebrated the Solemnity of St. Joseph on March 14, ahead of his feast day March 19, by gathering for dinner in the shadow of a beautiful St. Joseph Altar. The altar honoring the patron of the Universal Church featured statues representing Jesus, Mary, and Joseph; pictures of saints; loaves of bread shaped in Christian images; candles; flowers; and more. The parish’s administrator, Father Kevin Bazzel, blessed the St. Joseph Altar, food, and guests. Parishioners brought and shared meatless dishes including salmon, pasta, casseroles, salad, vegetables, and desserts. Special intentions were accepted and free will monetary donations were collected for the Catholic Center of Concern. The St. Joseph Altar tradition originated in Sicily to thank St. Joseph for interceding to end drought and famine.
