Local parish celebrates Mary in May Crowning
The Blessed Virgin Mary was venerated by members of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in Homewood during their May Procession and Crowning on May 3. Members of the Knights of Columbus Council 4304 served as honor guard as the procession proceeded with parish administrator Father Kevin Bazzel and altar servers followed by parishioners carrying flowers and singing “Bring Flowers of the Rarest.” The flowers were arranged at a side altar devoted to Mary, honoring her as the mother of Jesus Christ and of the Church. The statue representing Mary was adorned with a floral crown. Father Bazzel blessed and incensed the altar which is a reminder to honor Mary during the month of May and beyond. The tradition of the May Crowning dates to the 700s, highlighting Mary as Queen of Heaven and intercessor taking intentions to her Son, Jesus, our King.
