Local high school announces new director of athletics
John Carroll Catholic High School in Birmingham recently announced the hiring of Marty Rozell as the school’s new director of athletics. Rozell, who has served as the John Carroll Middle School director of athletics for the past three years, replaces Ronald Steele, who has held the position since 2017 and was named John Carroll’s principal in June 2023. Rozell will continue to teach in the history department at John Carroll as well.
“We are very excited that Marty Rozell will be leading our Cavalier Athletics program,” said Steele. “Marty brings a wealth of experience and aligns with our vision of athletics being a tool to form virtue in our students while creating a transformational experience. He is a hard worker, very detail-oriented, a well-respected member of the Alabama high school athletics community, and a proven leader.”
Rozell came to John Carroll from Spain Park High School in 2021 where he had taught and coached football (Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks) for seven years. During his time at Spain Park he was a part of the 2015 7A State Championship team.
Before Spain Park, Rozell taught and coached at Mountain Brook High School, Hewitt-Trussville High School, and Hoover High School. While at Mountain Brook, he was named the 2010 Alabama Football Coaches Association “6A Assistant Coach of the Year” and was a member of the 2002 and 2003 6A State Championship teams at Hoover High School.
Rozell graduated from the University of Alabama-Birmingham in 1997 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. He is married to the former Amy Digiovanna.
