Knights retire U. S. flags
Three hundred worn United States flags were retired properly on Flag Day, June 14, thanks to the dedication of the Msgr. Francis J. Wade Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus Assembly 1288 at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Homewood. Following the Pledge of Allegiance, those gathered placed disassembled flags into fire. The proper way to retire U. S. flags is cutting them, separating the stripes but keeping the blue field of stars intact, and burning them. Intact flags properly folded in a triangle can be placed in the fire. Flags cannot be buried or discarded. There is a collection box for tattered flags in the church’s parking garage for year-round use.
