John Carroll Catholic High School senior Elizabeth Okunbor was selected as the Kiwanis Club of Birmingham Youth of the Year for 2023. Okunbor was recognized at an awards luncheon on April 18. Out of 80 total scholar applications, six students were recognized at the luncheon. Markelle Scott from Huffman High School shared the recognition with Okunbor. Since 1970, the Kiwanis Club of Birmingham has awarded more than a quarter of a million dollars to graduating high school seniors in Jefferson and Shelby Counties. The students they honor exemplify scholarship, citizenship, service, and leadership. Okunbor will be attending the University of Alabama at Birmingham in the fall. She is the Mu Alpha Theta treasurer, a campus ministry minister, a member of the National Honor Society, and the founder and president of the John Carroll Business Club. She also serves on the Heritage Panel and is a member of the Environmental Club. Okunbor is a graduate of St. Francis Xavier Catholic School in Birmingham.
