Hope Has an Address
Serving Christ by Serving Our Neighbors
Serving Christ by Serving Our Neighbors
Each day at the Catholic Center of Concern in Huntsville, someone walks through our doors carrying a burden. Sometimes, it is a mother worried about keeping the lights on after paying rent. Sometimes, it is a senior choosing between purchasing life-sustaining medication and buying groceries. Other times, it is a family facing an unexpected financial crisis, wondering where to turn for help.
Our ministry exists to remind every person who comes through our doors that they are not alone.
As a ministry of the Diocese of Birmingham in Alabama, the Huntsville Catholic Center of Concern serves individuals and families throughout nine counties in North Alabama: Colbert, Franklin, Jackson, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, Marshall, and Morgan. Every person who seeks assistance is welcomed with dignity, compassion, and respect because we believe every individual is created in the image of God.
During the past year, the Catholic Center of Concern served more than 3,660 households, representing over 8,100 individuals throughout North Alabama. Because many families received more than one type of assistance, our ministry provided thousands of services tailored to each household's needs.
These services included rental assistance for 2,424 households, utility assistance for 1,169 households, and emergency prescription assistance for 21 households with life-threatening medical needs. Assistance also included clothing for 729 households, diapers and wipes for 356 households, 60 newborn gift packages, infant formula for 19 households, children's books for 19 households, and holiday food boxes for 15 households. Each service reflects our commitment to meeting families where they are, preserving their dignity, and helping them move toward greater stability and hope.
While financial assistance is often the most visible part of our work, our true mission is to restore hope. Every conversation, referral, volunteer interaction, and act of compassion reminds someone that they are seen, valued, and loved.
This ministry would not be possible without the generous support of the Diocesan Annual Appeal for Ministries. Every contribution entrusted to the appeal is an expression of Christ's love in action.
For example, one family came to our office after an unexpected financial setback left them at risk of losing their housing. They arrived discouraged and uncertain about what would happen next. Through careful assessment, community partnerships, and assistance from our programs, they were able to remain housed and begin rebuilding their financial stability. Their story is not unique. Each day, we have the privilege of helping individuals and families navigate difficult circumstances and work toward lasting stability.
Behind every service we provide, dedicated volunteers generously share their time and talents. They answer phones, greet visitors, sort donations, assist families in our clothing room, prepare newborn gift packages, and help ensure that everyone who enters our doors experiences kindness and respect. Their commitment reflects the Gospel through humble service.
As needs across North Alabama continue to grow, so does our commitment to responding with faith, compassion, and responsible stewardship. Every gift to the Diocesan Annual Appeal strengthens ministries such as the Catholic Center of Concern and enables us to continue serving our neighbors.
The Catholic Center of Concern is more than a place where assistance is provided. It is a place where Christ's love is encountered, dignity is restored, and hope is renewed. We are grateful to Bishop Raica, the Diocese of Birmingham, and every donor whose generosity makes this ministry possible. Together, we continue to be the hands and feet of Christ, serving our neighbors one family, one act of kindness, and one restored life at a time.
