Building bridges of faith
Hispanic Young Adult Ministry
Hispanic Young Adult Ministry
This year marks five years since the Diocese of Birmingham formally established Hispanic Young Adult Ministry — Pastoral Juvenil Hispana — within the Office of Hispanic Ministry. What began as a pastoral response to a growing need has become an essential bridge between cultures, generations, and parish communities throughout the diocese.
In a diocese where the primary language of ministry is English, Pastoral Juvenil Hispana plays a distinct and strategic role. It serves Hispanic young adults of first- and second-generation families — young men and women who are bilingual, bicultural, and daily navigate two worlds. Rather than existing on the margins of either culture, these young adults are increasingly becoming protagonists in their communities.
They are bridge-builders, uniquely positioned to connect English-speaking parish structures with Spanish-speaking families. They understand both cultural realities, pastoral sensitivities, and generational expectations. As the Hispanic presence in the diocese continues to grow, this bridging role is not optional — it is essential, helping the Church respond more effectively.
Accompaniment, formation, and empowerment are the core of Pastoral Juvenil Hispana’s mission, and thanks to the continued support of the Diocesan Annual Appeal for
Ministries, also known as Catholic Charities, this ministry has been sustained and strengthened over the past five years. The appeal has allowed the development of leadership formation, retreats, parish-based young adult groups, and structured spaces for prayer and discernment with active groups currently present in St. Francis Xavier, Birmingham; Prince of Peace, Hoover; St. Thomas the Apostle, Montevallo; Holy Spirit, Huntsville; Holy Spirit, Tuscaloosa; St. Jude, Scottsboro; Corpus Christi, Oneonta; Good Shepherd, Russellville; and St. Joseph, Florence.
The parish communities serve as intentional spaces of faith formation and fraternity. Young adults gather to grow in Scripture, receive catechetical formation, and strengthen their sacramental life, which leads to service as catechists, parish leaders, ministry coordinators, and volunteers across diocesan initiatives.
The role of Pastoral Juvenil Hispana is not to create separation but to strengthen unity. It ensures that bilingual and bicultural young adults are not overlooked but equipped — not isolated but integrated — not passive participants but active protagonists in the life of the Church.
As the ministry celebrates five years, it has become apparent that the young adults are not simply adapting to two cultures; they are shaping the future of the diocesan Church by serving as living bridges between them.
With gratitude to Catholic Charities and to the parishes that have embraced Pastoral Juvenil Hispana’s mission, the ministry continues forward, forming leaders who reflect the richness of the Church and who are ready to serve with faith, maturity, and missionary courage.
