Answering a call to action

Why do I support Bishop Raica’s appeal for Catholic Charities and Communities for the Diocese of Birmingham? I believe that answering Bishop Raica’s annual call is not just a response to a request; rather, it’s a reflection of a deeply held belief in stewardship, philanthropy, and the principles of our Catholic faith. These three pillars intertwine to form a dynamic triad of responsibility that shapes our lives and guides our actions. As stewards of God's gifts, we are entrusted to responsibly manage and share our resources for the common good. In embracing this responsibility, we demonstrate our commitment to addressing the philanthropic needs of our diocese with compassion and solidarity, all while staying true to the teachings of our Catholic faith. It is my sincere hope that you, too, will answer this call to action.

Inquiries often arise regarding the mechanics of the Bishop's Annual Appeal for Catholic Charities and Communities: How does the campaign work? What if I didn't receive a pledge card? How is the money allocated? Can I support an individual ministry directly through the annual campaign? These type questions are common; therefore, I would like to provide a comprehensive overview of the campaign's structure and operations.

The Bishop’s Annual Campaign for Catholic Charities and Communities operates on an annual basis, beginning in September and extending over twelve months. This extended duration allows for pledges and donations to be collected consistently throughout the year. The campaign begins with a formal announcement, followed by a period of active solicitation and fundraising efforts. Although the official launch takes place in September, pledges and gifts are welcome at any time.

Awareness and participation are key facets of the campaign, necessitating various marketing and promotional efforts. These initiatives include newsletters, social media campaigns, parish bulletins, direct mailings, and announcements during church services. Additionally, printed materials like brochures, pledge cards, and informational packets are disseminated to pastors and parishioners, supporting the appeal's objectives and impact. You may also receive personalized follow-ups via email, letters, or phone calls.

Contributions to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal are necessary to support many diverse ministries and programs within the diocese. These ministries are an extension of the work a parish can do on its own, and the allocations are meticulously determined based on priorities set by Bishop Raica and diocesan leadership. The allocations are categorized into Fundamental Need, which includes Catholic Centers of Concern, Catholic Family Services, Catholic Social Services, and Multicultural Services, and Faith Formation/Evangelization, which includes Religious Education, Campus Ministry, Catholic Schools, Multicultural Ministries, Respect for Life, Vocations, and Youth and Young Adults Education. Support of the greater campaign allows strategic support of ministry budgets where it is most needed. Of course, a gift directed to an individual ministry will also be honored.

Transparency and accountability are extremely important. Reports and regular updates are provided to pastors to track the campaign's progress. Moreover, examples of how contributions are used to support charitable activities can be seen throughout the diocese in the thriving schools, the record number of men studying for priesthood, the many youth and adults entering the faith, and the work of the Centers for Concern.

Our team is committed to our work, meeting regularly to evaluate the effectiveness of each year's appeal and make improvements for future campaigns. This involves collaboration and feedback from donors and supported ministries, assessing strategies, refining communication efforts, and strengthening relationships with pastors to better engage parishioners and support the various ministries dependent on the campaign's success.

Your support is invaluable in perpetuating the mission of the Bishop’s Annual Campaign. Whether through online donations via the provided link, mailing a donation, or reaching out via phone, every contribution serves to uphold the charitable endeavors of the diocese and enact positive change within our communities. Together, let us heed the call to stewardship and solidarity, guided by the tenets of our Catholic faith, striving to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve as together we look forward to the future with confidence. It is my hope that you, too, will answer the call.
