50 years a priest

On April 12, Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Hoover was at full capacity as parishioners and friends and family of Father Ray Dunmyer flocked to the parish to celebrate the priest’s 50th anniversary of ordination to the priesthood. Archbishop Joseph Marino, Bishop Steven Raica, and Bishop Emeritus Robert Baker were in choir and more than 14 priests concelebrated, including Abbot Marcus Voss, O.S.B. Deacons Rick DiGiorgio, Gary Hoover, and Wally Zieverink assisted. Following Mass, a luncheon in Father Dunmyer’s honor was held in the parish’s Deasy Hall. Father Dunmyer was ordained to the priesthood on April 3, 1976, by Bishop Joseph Gregory Vath, the diocese’s first bishop, at the Cathedral of St. Paul in Birmingham. Over the course of his 50 years as a priest, Father Dunmyer has served many parishes throughout the diocese, offering particular service in spiritual formation, campus ministry, ecumenical activities, and interfaith initiatives.
