‘Veterans Salute’

Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Assembly 2420, Father Patrick J, Murphy, based at St. John the Baptist Parish in Madison, hosted its first “Veterans Salute” event on Nov. 15. The event was conducted as a demonstration of the assembly’s commitment to the fourth principle of the Knights of Columbus, patriotism.

The evening, which included posting the colors by the Assembly Color Guard, a presentation on the “Missing Hero” table, and an emotional video message on veterans sacrifices, was attended by 95 guests.

During dinner, a continuous slideshow of almost 50 pictures of the parish’s veterans in their uniformed days was shown and included a WWII veteran as well as a U.S.N. submarine dive officer – the parish’s pastor Father Bryan Lowe. Also included were slides for each branch of service showing the K of C “Roll of Honor” of council and assembly members who have served.

After dinner, the guest speaker, Deacon Paul Keil, delivered an excellent address that included information on his own remarkable service experience and the practicalities of service to the country that so many have endured for the benefit of all.

A Military Medley in recognition of those who served rounded off the salute to veterans. The final part of the event was the presentation of the proceeds from the event to Semper Fi Community Task force in Huntsville, totaling $1650 in support of their work for veterans in the North Alabama area.

In addition to the Knights, the K of C Ladies Auxiliary, seniors from John Paul II Catholic High School, and the kitchen staff of St. John’s all formed a great team to make the event possible.
