Upcoming school year will see a change in high school athletic classification system

On Jan. 23, the Alabama High School Athletic Association announced a significant change to the classification system for championship play, which will go into effect with the 2026-2027 school year. The move will separate public and private schools, creating six classifications for public schools and two for private schools. While the shift does separate public schools from private in terms of state championships, schools will not be prohibited from competing across classifications.

In response to the news, Margaret Dubose, superintendent of Catholic schools, noted, “As educators and school leaders, our focus remains on the formation, development, and well-being of our student athletes.”  She continued by recognizing the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s recent decision “reflects an effort to respond to the changing landscape of high school athletics in our state.” She expressed her commitment to continuing to provide strong, mission-driven athletic programs geared towards building character, discipline, teamwork, and faith in all students. “Regardless of classification structure,” Dubose stressed, “our priority is ensuring that student athletes have opportunities to grow, compete, and represent their schools with integrity and excellence.” She concluded by stating she and diocesan leadership “look forward to continued collaboration with athletic and school leaders across Alabama to support what is best for students.”
