Record breaking donation made for special needs education

On Jan. 29, a record check for $15,130 was presented at the Madison City Schools Board meeting for special needs education. This sum was collected from the efforts of Knights of Columbus, the Ladies Auxiliary, and friends from St. John the Baptist Council 10232 and from Most Merciful Jesus Council 17519 in Madison.

The 2025 Intellectual Disabilities Drive commenced in October with collections being made outside a business and after Masses at St. John’s. The effort also included the drive’s signature event, a 5k race and 1k fun run. On Nov. 1, the eighth annual race attracted 737 registrations and saw knights and ladies gathering at 5:30 a.m. to administer the event through the streets of Madison.

Over the years, proceeds from the race has enabled the two councils to make annual donations to Madison City Schools which resulted in the purchase and installation of special “nooks” for use by staff when trying to calm distressed children.

Representatives present for this year’s donation presentation included Grand Knight Craig Priebe (10232), Grand Knight Larry Ryan (17519,) race organizer Nick Selig, and 10232 Ladies Auxiliary President Mary Duffy.
