Master pen turner Tim Reid to join Bernard Blues & BBQ, Sept. 6–7
Bernard Blues & BBQ is excited to welcome back artisan Tim Reid of Chattanooga, Tennessee, whose handcrafted pens and unique wood-turned creations have captivated visitors for years.
Reid ‘s passion for pen turning began in 2012, when his father, now 84 years old, taught him the craft, passing down skills he had learned from his brother. What started with wood has expanded into a variety of materials, but Reid admits natural and stabilized woods remain his favorite. “It’s a bit more forgiving than resin,” he says.
A self-described shy person, Reid laughs about how the craft changed him. “Once I started making pens, I couldn’t keep my mouth shut,” he recalls. Over the years, he has mastered even the most challenging projects, like crafting a fountain pen from a corn cob. “The first one shattered, and I had to start over—but now it’s no big deal.”
While 2025 has been all about pizza cutters and ice cream scoops, Reid’s booth will feature a wide selection of functional, everyday treasures ranging from $15 to $150. “Everything I make can be used every day,” he notes.
Reid and his wife, Sally, have three grown children and seven grandchildren—two of whom have already taken their turn on the family lathe, making it a four-generation tradition. After retiring from a 27-year career with the City of Chattanooga’s golf course, Reid turned his full attention to woodworking, traveling to 12–15 shows a year.
Visitors can find Reid at his booth all weekend, ready to share stories and showcase his craft. Follow his work on Facebook at - As the Wood Turns.
Bernard Blues & BBQ will be held Sept. 6–7, on the beautiful campus of St. Bernard Abbey and Preparatory School in Cullman. The event features live music, award-winning BBQ, and juried arts and crafts from across the Southeast.
