
John Carroll Catholic High School celebrates 78th graduating class
As a Catholic institution, John Carroll Catholic strives to nurture young people who are driven by a passion for learning and a commitment to living meaningful lives in service to God and others. The Class of 2025 set an exemplary standard in academics, fine arts, athletics, and, most importantly, in fostering the spiritual life of the school. During their time at John Carroll, the students collectively upheld pillars of learning, leadership, and service. They truly embodied the school’s mission of holistic formation and education, grounded in the light and love of God.
The Class of 2025 had a total of 11,964 hours of service given to the school, parishes, diocesan partner schools, and the Birmingham area. The students received 210 scholarships and grants, representing 61% of the class and totaling $6,532,404 million.
Emerson Schneider, a graduate of Prince of Peace Catholic School, was announced as the class valedictorian and the recipient of the Bishop’s Trophy. Nathaniel Rohling, a graduate of Our Lady of the Valley Catholic School, was recognized as class salutatorian. Schneider will be attending Swarthmore College as a collegiate student-athlete in swimming, and Rohling will be attending Auburn University.
At the school’s Senior Class Awards Night, many students were recognized. The Linda and Roy Taylor Memorial Scholarship went to Timothy Miller and Lynleigh Bryant. The Eric Wieschaus Science Award went to Nathaniel Rohling, and the Tyler Porter Memorial Scholarship went to Jackson Gignilliat. Will Magruder received the Sister Dominica Award, and Mia Wos received the Tom Banks Award. The Floyd Meshad Award went to Anthony Mokry, and the Pat Sullivan Award went to Braydon Lowery. Mary Catherine Golab received the Deacon Joe Stephens Award, and Sienna Massa received the Robert Lumpkins Award. The Lynette Bice Casey Cavalier Spirit Award went to Mary Beaumont, and the Bailey Chesnut Scholarship went to Zoe Caron. The Marjorie Champion Salamone Award went to Eva Watts, and the Destin Doughty Track Award went to Will Metcalf. Victoria Ryan received the Destin Doughty Art Award. Sequoah Hicks, Juliana Rickman, and Vince Truitt received the Sister Mary Leo Emmaus Award. The Joe Milazzo Art Award went to Will Magruder, and the Senior Musicianship Award went to Christopher Gore. Mary Beaumont received the Band Merit Award, and Eva Watts received the Patrick Gilmore Award. Larissa Garrett received the Phillip Sousa Award, and Veronica Walker received the St. Pope John Paul II Award for the Arts. The Speech Arts Club Award went to Vince Truitt, and the Trailblazers Award went to Kennedy Walton. Mary, Mother of Grace went to Kathryn Lynch, and Joseph, Faithful Guardian and Protector went to Nicholas Shunnarah. Anne Bailey Stone received the Cavs IN Service Award for recording the most service hours.
The National Merit Scholar was Will Magruder, and Braydon Lowery received the Bryant-Jordan Achievement Award. The Bryant-Jordan Academic Award went to Emerson Schneider. The Eagle Scouts recognized were Harrison Balducci, Jimmy McMillan, Alex Perrin, and Jaxon Perrin. The Girl Scout Gold Award went to Veronica Walker. Victoria Ryan received the Community Bank Scholarship, and Braydon Lowery received the OLV Knights of Columbus Scholarship. UA Early College recognition went to Kourtney Bufford, Christopher Gore, Michael Rhodes, and Joseph Zarzaur. Ava Koch received the ROTC Scholarship, and Will Magruder was recognized as the Rotary Club Scholar-Athlete. Noel Dedman, Suzan Marinelli, Angeles Martinez-Cruz, Ava Mize, Nathaniel Rohling, Victoria Ryan, Emerson Schneider, and Sophie Kate Turner were recognized for AP Capstone Completion. Careers in Industry Readiness Certificates went to Trey Harris, Loretzy Jimenez, Fletcher Leffel, Will Metcalf, Jessica Michael, and Robert Tucker.
Each department also presented awards to the Class of 2025. Will Magruder received the English Department Award. The Mathematics Department Award went to Emerson Schneider. Nathaniel Rohling received the Science Department Award, and the Social Science Department Award went to Sophie Kate Turner. The Spanish Award went to Kennedy Walton, and the French Award went to Suzan Marinelli. Vince Truitt received the Classical Languages Award. The Theology Department recognized Alec Archer, and the Visual Arts Department recognized Zoe Caron. The Choir Award went to Loretzy Jimenez, and Veronica Walker received the Band Award. The female Drama Award went to Larissa Garrett and the male Drama Award went to Ephraim Robinson. The Family & Consumer Science Award went to Miranda Tindal.
The top ten students in the class, from first to tenth, were Emerson Schneider, Nathaniel Rohling, Alex Nguyen, Will Magruder, Spence Tighe, Olivia Le, Ava Mize, Luke Holmes, Vince Truitt, and Larissa Garrett.
Students continuing their athletic careers in college include Tori Botthof, soccer at Wofford College; Jacoby Claughton, basketball at Tougaloo College; Kaydence Hay, color guard at Auburn University; JD Latham, lacrosse at the University of Montevallo; Tim Meehan, tennis at Central Alabama Community College; Rafferty Patun, golf at Spring Hill College; Emerson Schneider, swimming at Swarthmore College; Sophia Sevier, soccer at Spring Hill College; Sophie Kate Turner, cheer at Tulane University; and Braxton Williams, baseball at Central Alabama Community College.
On Saturday, May 24, the members of the Class of 2025 and their families gathered to celebrate the Baccalaureate Mass at Prince of Peace Catholic Church. Commencement exercises were held on Sunday, May 25, in the John Carroll Catholic High School gymnasium.
Speaking to the class, the president of the school, Father Jon Chalmers, remarked, “As a Catholic high school, John Carroll trains young people who are inspired by a passion for learning and seek to lead lives of significance to God and others. The Class of 2025 embodies these words and is a testament to the enduring legacy of John Carroll students. They have left a mark of excellence in academics, fine arts, athletics, and, most importantly, the school's spiritual life.
