Formation Day brings Catholic educators together in faith and mission
Each year, educators from throughout the Diocese of Birmingham in Alabama come together for Catholic Schools Formation Day, a day intended to strengthen not only the professional practice of those who serve in our schools, but also the faith and shared mission that unite them.
This year’s Formation Day brought together teachers, administrators, clergy, and school staff from across the diocese for a day of prayer, learning, fellowship, and renewal. With schools spread throughout northern and central Alabama, the annual gathering provides a unique opportunity for Catholic educators to experience being part of something larger: one community of schools joined together in the Church’s mission of Catholic education.
The day began with the celebration of Mass by Father Kevin Bazzel, Vicar General of the Diocese of Birmingham in Alabama. Beginning with Mass served as an important reminder that the work of Catholic education is rooted first in Christ and that every classroom, office, athletic field, and school ministry is ultimately an extension of the Church’s evangelizing mission.
Sister Nancy Usselmann, F.S.P., then offered the keynote address, inviting participants to consider the ways Catholic educators are called to bring the light of Christ into their work and into the lives of the young people entrusted to their care in a rapidly changing world. Her message complemented the Catholic Schools Office’s 2026–2027 theme, Lighting Our Way, which calls school communities both to follow Christ as their light and to reflect that light for others.
The afternoon provided opportunities for continued learning through a variety of workshop sessions. Led by presenters who shared their knowledge and experience with colleagues, the sessions addressed topics designed to support educators in their spiritual, instructional, and professional growth.
Formation Day also provided an opportunity to celebrate those who are helping Catholic education continue to grow. During the gathering, the Catholic Schools Office announced the 2026 Faith in Education grant awards and the newest recipients of the Monsignor Michael F. Sexton Continuing Education Scholarship. Members of the inaugural Aspiring Leaders Academy cohort were also recognized, highlighting the diocese’s commitment to developing the next generation of Catholic school leaders.
While Formation Day lasts only one day, its purpose extends throughout the school year. Catholic educators return to their individual school communities renewed in faith, strengthened by one another, and reminded that they share a common calling.
Together, they continue the work of lighting our way, helping students encounter Christ, discover their God-given gifts, and become people prepared to carry His light into the world.
