Father Coyle Memorial Mass

On Aug. 11, the 104th anniversary of Father James E. Coyle’s murder, Bishop Raica celebrated Mass at the Cathedral of St. Paul to honor the memory of the slain priest. Father Bryan Jerabek, pastor and rector of the cathedral, gave the homily. Afterwards, the faithful gathered for a reception in the cathedral’s Life Center. In 1921, Father Coyle was killed on the rectory porch of St. Paul’s, while praying his breviary. Just two hours prior to the shooting, Father Coyle had presided over the marriage of Ruth Stephenson and Pedro Gussman, a man of Puerto Rican heritage. Rev. E.R. Stephenson, the father of Ruth, held strong anti-Catholic feelings and disapproved on the union. After learning of the marriage, the enraged Stephenson took his gun to St. Paul’s and proceeded to shoot Father Coyle three times.
