‘Building something eternal’

As exemplified in this issue’s cover story, the diocesan Centers of Concern are nothing without the volunteers who show up day after day with compassionate hearts and willing hands. They are nothing without the donors — men and women who quietly give what they can to ensure someone else’s burden is a little lighter. At their best, these centers are not just buildings; they are living, breathing examples of Christ’s love in action. However, bringing Christ’s love to others is not unique to the Centers of Concern. In fact, every ministry assisted by the annual appeal strives to fulfill the same mission.

When we give our time, talent, and treasure, the Lord becomes truly present in our work. Every service provided by every diocesan ministry isn’t just a mere service; rather, each service is a moment of divine encounter.

Our Diocesan Annual Appeal for Ministries, also known as Catholic Charities, is rooted in the teachings of Christ and reflects the very heart of Christian discipleship. This year’s theme, “With Love We Serve: Building a Future of Hope,” is a call to embody the Gospel in both word and deed.

This theme reminds us that stewardship is more than a duty — it is a joy. It is not simply about meeting a financial goal. It is about living our faith. It is about seeing the face of Christ in every person we serve and recognizing that we are all part of one Body, united behind a mission greater than ourselves.

Across the 39 counties of our diocese, we see diverse faces united in community — young and old, rich and poor, rural and urban. Each plays a vital role in the life of the Church. In giving, we do not lose; we gain. We grow in holiness, in compassion, and in connection to one another.

As St. Paul reminds us in Galatians 5:13, “Through love serve one another.”

So I ask of you today: Join the mission. Serve with love. Be the heart of Christ in your community. Your gift, your presence, and your prayers are the building blocks of a future filled with hope.

Together, with love, we serve. And together, we build something eternal.
