Bishop Raica releases statement on the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis

On April 21, the day Pope Francis passed away, Bishop Steven Raica released a statement to the faithful of the Diocese of Birmingham. The complete text of his statement follows herein.

It is with profound sorrow and deep reverence that the Diocese of Birmingham in Alabama joins the universal Church in mourning the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis. His departure from this world leaves a deep void in our hearts, yet we remain uplifted by the enduring witness of his life, his faith, and his tireless devotion to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Pope Francis brought to the Church a unique and courageous vision—one rooted in humility, mercy, and a missionary spirit. From the very beginning of his papacy, he called the Church to look outward, not inward. He often reminded us that the Church must not be ā€œself-referential,ā€ but rather a Church that "goes forth"—a Church always on mission. His words and actions consistently reflected a love for those who live in the periphery of society and are often overlooked. He had a large heart for the poor and a longing that every soul might encounter the transformative love of Christ.

In God’s mysterious providence, Pope Francis passed into eternal life on Easter Monday, within the Octave of Easter—a week steeped in the celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Victor over death. That he would be called home during this sacred time is a moving testament to the hope he so often proclaimed: that life does not end in death but is changed. In the Resurrection, Pope Francis found the courage to lead with joy, even in suffering. And now, we entrust him to the same Risen Lord, in Whom he placed his every hope.

As we pray for the repose of his soul, we also give thanks to God for the gift of his papacy. May his legacy inspire us to live with compassion, to seek justice, and to go forth in love—ever on mission for Christ.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.
