Bishop Raica pens message regarding Hurricane Iasias
Mark 4:39, 41 – “He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. … They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”
To the people of the Diocese of Birmingham, Hurricane Isaias will be reaching the Gulf coast shore of Alabama, Florida, and Mississippi tonight and last through most of tomorrow (Saturday). As I write this message on Friday morning, Hurricane Isaias has reached a Category 3 with sustained winds of about 120 MPH. While it is anticipated to abate when it reaches landfall due to sheers in the upper atmosphere, it will still pack a big punch in the affected areas of the state. Moreover, it is anticipated to move quickly through our state as it dissipates into a tropical storm.
Nevertheless, during the night, we expect winds, heavy rain, and pop-up tornado activity through our territory, especially on the eastern side of the eye of the hurricane.
I urge all parishioners to stay tuned to your preferred media (TV, radio, weather apps, etc.) and follow the indications of civil protection officials to keep our neighbors safe. If necessary, seek appropriate or sturdier shelter that can withstand the brunt of the anticipated wind and water.
In the meantime, let us keep each other in prayer as we support each other during the storm and during the recovery phase of the hurricane.
I am praying for the least amount of damage to people and property so that we can return to our normal life as soon as possible.
